Usually, closing the apartment door lets you forget the spaces behind you—the meandering hallways, the communal laundry,2 the row of neighbors’ doors. Not so for the Paris-based client of interior architect Olivier Debin. A protruding curved wall, echoing the building’s stairwell, sits squarely in the middle of his 505-square-foot apartment. Touring the space for the first time, Debin recognized that the challenge lay in crafting a layout that worked with the immovable structure rather than against it.
